De route begint bij Malaga’s port tegenover Bike Tours Malaga. De haven ligt in een grote natuurlijke baai en is van fundamenteel belang voor de toeristische sector van de Costa del Sol. Door het jaar heen leggen hier de grootste cruiseschepen en privéjachten aan. Het havengebied Muelle Uno is ook een aanrader om te bezoeken, met het Pompidou Museum, het Hard Rock Café en vele boetiekjes en restaurants.
Vertrek in westelijke richting vanaf de haven via de boulevard en het fietspad, tot aan de Chimenea de la Central Térmica de La Misericordia (for a long time Malaga’s tallest building). After a stop for a photo, follow the cycle path until the roundabout in the Sacaba . Don’t cross the street on this roundabout to stay on the cycle path, but go straight ahead and down the dirt ramp towards the nature park.
Vanaf hier kun je over een goed grindpad bij de zee vandaan fietsen om bij de eerste witte brug uit te komen en neem je hierna de helling omhoog.
You’ll pass the entrance to the nature reserve which is home to a variety of native bird species. From the several bird hides you might even be able to spot flamingos, which occasionally visit the lagoon.
Another small burst of energy will take you to the Costa del Sol’s original beach resort, Torremolinos, dat bekend staat om zijn nachtleven en restaurants. Blijf de paden volgen, steek de groene brug over en sla linksaf. Ga rechts bij de 2 stenen pilaren om Calle Guadalhorce in te slaan. Blijf deze straat volgen richting het westen tot je de afslag Playa ziet op de rotonde. Neem deze afslag om richting het strand te gaan.
Following the beach promenade will take you into the heart of Torremolinos, la Carihuela, where you can stop for an ice cream or a beer. If you push on a little bit, you’ll reach the lighthouse of Benalmadena (about 20 km from your start point at Bike Tours Malaga).
Torremolinos is a former fishing village, but has developed into a vibrant multicultural city that attracts, especially in the summer months, numerous tourists who want to enjoy the sun, the beach and parties. During the winter months it regains its tranquility and it’s the locals who go for walks on the 9 km long sandy beach. Also, many chiringuitos (strandrestaurants) die een heerlijke lunch of een snel hapje van zeevruchten aanbieden.
Benalmadena is ook een zeer populaire bestemming aan de Costa del Sol met brede zandstranden, barren, hotels, clubs en de jachthaven, met plaats voor meer dan 1000 schepen. Bezoek ook eens de Tivoli kabelbaan boven de stad, die je naar de top van de berg Calamorro brengt, waar je een roofvogelshow kunt bekijken. Vanuit Benalmadena kun je terugfietsen naar Malaga of de plaatselijke trein nemen.
Als je verder naar het westen gaat, kom je in de mooie badplaats Fuengirola, wat ongeveer 30 km is vanaf Malaga. Nogmaals, je hebt de keuze om terug te fietsen of om de lokale trein terug te nemen.
